In 1992, several agencies joined forces to discuss program expansion, additional space, and budget constraints. They also saw the need for a focused, single point of entry, a “one-stop” social services center to house a variety of service providers. In October 1995, this committee became operational and developed a mission statement, formalized a board of directors, adopted by-laws, and received 501 (C) 3 status.
Several sites were discussed and plans to build a new facility or renovate an old one in good condition were considered. Word of the availability of a large building on Griffin Hospital ground led to questions and eventually negotiations with the Oklahoma State Department of Mental Health and Substance Abuse Services to lease and then renovate the former Veterans Administration Hospital building. The site was deemed practical because of its proximity to other community resources.
Characteristics
of the service population include low income, children and youth, single parents,
families, senior citizens, citizens with mental and physical disabilities,
and those in need of employment and training services.
